Lily Lehr (IMES): Plastic Tundra?

A Bit About Me:

My name is Lily Lehr. I have always had a passion for saving the environment around us in the ways we can. I love watching the ocean from afar and learning of its amazing creatures. My excitement of these animals has helped keep the joy and commitment to learning in Environmental Sciences and Oceanography at Daytona State College. School is very important to me and everyday we should learn something new - no matter what setting and circumstance we are in. As well as paying strong focus to my studies I model and do photography, and sometimes it gets hard to find a picture of me.

My Research Proposal:

About my Research Proposal:

Our beach ecosystem gets majorly affected by tourism and the tides. Whether it is people leaving behind trash or the second-hand affects of people putting trash in the oceans. Wrack on the beach protects the dunes, feeds and shelters animals, and becomes a fertilizer for the vegetation. Due to plastic infiltrating this area animals are eating mass amounts of plastic, the wrack is dying, and the shorelines will start fading. This proposal was to determine if the tide bringing in plastic or beachgoers have a greater impact. With this project it takes the next step to helping our ocean and beach from plastic. The goal of my project is to build an understanding of the affects we have on our wilderness. To start gaining attention and education for the populations that go to the beach.
