Arianna McCollum (Quanta Capstone)--The Relationship between Dark Humor Through Memes and Depression: What Role Does Emotional Intelligence Play?

A Little bit About me:

Hello, my name is Arianna McCollum and I will be finishing my last semester at Daytona State College this summer. I plan on transferring to UCF to completer my BS in Biomedical Sciences. I am fascinated with the online phenomenon known as "Memes". My main interests in research currently are Memes and Depression. My overall research for graduate school will be concerning alternative forms of therapy.

Research Proposal:

About the Research Proposal:
Since the era of social media, dark humor through the use of memes on social platforms has become one of the most popular methods of communicating and representing depression symptoms. This shows that memes could slowly become a key indicator of this mental illness. Where previous studies have neglected to research not only memes but memes that are specifically identified as dark humor and their relationship to depression, this study aims to reveal this link to depression and to also expand upon the knowledge of communicating through memes. Along with dark humor, I wanted to assess whether or not emotional intelligence, or knowledge of one's own emotions and how to control them,  would play a role in being an identifier of depression.
